'Mustafa Bashir, 34, has been spared jail to pursue a professional cricket career, despite battering his wife with his own bat because Judge Richard Mansell QC said he did not believe Fakhara Karim was a victim. Judge Mansell said he did not believe the 33-year-old receptionist was vulnerable as she was "an intelligent woman with a network of friends" and had a college degree.' - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/27/judge-says-wife-forced-drink-bleach-not-vulnerable-has-friends/
The decision made by Judge Richard Mansell QC, to not send Mustafa Bashir to prison for battering Farhara Karim and forcing her to drink bleach, is a grotesque miscarriage of justice and worthy of serious disciplinary action.
In addition, his comments regarding Ms Karim's 'vulnerability' as a victim are ludicrous and morally reprehensible - "I am not convinced she was a vulnerable person. Sometimes women who moved here from their country become trapped in a relationship where they lose their support network of family and friends and cannot speak the language - this is not the case here. She is plainly an intelligent woman with a network of friends and did go on to graduate university with a 2:1 and a masters". Being educated and having friends does not make a person any less likely a victim of domestic violence. This case sets a dangerous precedent, and will discourage victims of abuse from coming forward.
Survivors of domestic violence deserve justice. Judge Richard Mansell is not fit to deliver justice, and so must be dismissed.
