Coach John Devine was a dedicated counselor and coach of track and field at Longmeadow High School for 32 years. Winning was never his main focus (though he did lead the team to 405 wins, 26 league championships, and six Western Mass titles); rather, he said that he used track and field "as a vehicle to try to encourage students to properly prepare, to acquire some skills, and to be positive and confident". His humble and supportive demeanor have helped shape the lives of countless student athletes during his tenure at LHS who will fondly remember shouting "I'm a masterpiece" during warm-ups. Mr. Devine retired from coaching in 2018, and shortly thereafter was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He has still remained resilient and committed to improving the lives of others since receiving his diagnosis. In recognition of his contributions to the Longmeadow community, this petition is being started to name the track at LHS in his honor.
