A Chairde ,
We the undersigned committee are proposing a name for the new bridge which connects the rear of the county council offices on great water st, to the Albert Reynolds Peace Park. We propose its named after Martin Hurson for the following reason ,Martin Hurson was one of the hunger strikers in 1981 ,he was also a candidate in the General Election of the same year in this constituency ,polling 4,573 first preference votes. This event in Irish political history ultimately led to the death of Martin after 46 days and 9 of his comrades and it also led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement another historical event in our history. Albert Reynolds our TD here in Longford played a pivotal role in this treaty and the local Mall Complex was renamed in his honour for his work in bringing peace to our island ,we must not forget Martins sacrifice for this peace . Many past long standing and respected members of this council and in fact current party members of FF worked on Martins campaign and attended his funeral with a couple actually carrying his coffin. "Building Bridges" is a much used term between communities all over the world ,and what better way to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice that Martin Hurson gave to reach the ultimate goal of PEACE ON THIS ISLAND OF OURS . That is why we propose that Longford County Council name this new bridge The Martin Hurson Bridge
