Protect The Children of Long Hill Township from a School Invasion

The magnitude of evil is quite difficult for a weary, fragile parent to comprehend as we embark each day on a new journey with our most precious in tow.  We are awakened each day with the loving call to protect deeply our children, nurture and enable them to succeed.  Unfortunately in our United States our children have been scarred by School shootings and School invasions since 1998. More than 187,000 students have been exposed to gun violence at schools since Columbine.  The Massacre on December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School which claimed the lives of 20 elementary school children and 6 adults has not prevented further destruction in our schools. Since the harrowing Sandy Hook School Invasion there have been 290 school shootings in the Untied States.  Research supports the critical role of a nurturing environment for all children. The physical and psychological safety of our children is our responsibility. As deeply frightened parents we cannot barricade against all harm that may come to our children, however we have a moral responsibility to improve school safety measures to the best of our ability. A first responder to a school invasion is often greeted by large loss of student life that could have been thwarted and stopped in real time if the intruder was met by 'In school' law enforcement at the time gunfire commenced.  Once first responders arrive to a school shooting there is significant loss of life.

In October of 2016, four years after the Sandy Hook Massacre in Newtown Connecticut then Governor Chris Christie signed Bill S86 which allows Class III Special officers to serve as security inside New Jersey schools, creating a safer environment for our children and staff by deterring acts of violence and responding to school invasion in a manner that can prevent loss of life.

On behalf of the Long Hill Township student body, educators, staff and parents, we ask of you today to sign the petition below indicating your support for the inclusion of Class III officers in Gillette, Millington and Central Schools of Long Hill Township.  In the setting of the unique and prominent gun culture in which we live, as well as the pervasive mental illness within our troubled youth, It is our fundamental parental responsibility to protect against the untimely demise of our deepest blessing, our children.
