TO VICE CHANCELLOR MARIO K. CASTILLO, J.D.:
WHEREAS Freedom of speech is a fundamental American freedom and a human right, and there’s no place that this right should be more valued and protected than America’s colleges and universities. Places of higher education exists to educate students and advance the frontiers of human knowledge, and that is something that cannot happen properly when students or faculty members fear punishment for expressing views that might be unpopular with the public or disfavored by administrators. Therefore, we (the student body) will not remain bystanders as we witness the unjustified removal of a faculty member by the Lone Star College Cy-Fair administration after multiple unsuccessful attempts to censor her voice. While Kelli Vorish Associate Professor of Sociology has been questioned multiple times about the nature of her curriculum, no other Professor of Sociology has been questioned with the ferocity that she has experienced, while using the same curriculum. These failed attempts have led to a change in the policy “IV.F.8 (change in contract status)”, which now allows the chancellor to make a change to the contract of any LSC-Cy-fair employee after recommendation. This change in policy is an attempt to justify the unjustified removal of Associate Professor Kelli Vorish.

WE the undersigned petition Vice Chancellor Mario K. Castillo, J.D.  and The Lone Star College College System Board of Trustees: To immediately reverse the change of contract of Professor Kelli Vorish from “non-renewal” as well as the change in policy “IV.F.8”. We seek this reversal in policy change to protect the future of our educators and their right to free speech.
