Recently, the owner of the new professional baseball team in London, Ontario unveiled the name and mascot for their team. They came up with the name of the "Rippers". And their mascot? Diamond Jack. They have denied making reference to the serial killer from London, England that brutally murdered many women in the 1800's. They also, "coincidentally", unveiled this new mascot and team name on Wear Purple Day when the community was showing support for abused women. This ignorance and normalizing of abuse against women is unacceptable. Many people might argue that there are professional sports teams with names like the Redskins, the Indians, and even the Dahmers. But to give London the team name of the Rippers and to somehow justify this team name as okay because other teams have offensive names, that makes it okay? No, it doesn't. It is understandable to see the connection between "ripping" and baseball. But to have the mascot and story line that goes along with the team name crosses the line (look at their video on their Facebook page). Please sign this petition if you think the name and logo should change and hopefully this will show Team President, David Martin that people are not pleased and this is not okay.
