Angus Johnson started this petition to London Ontario City Council and

In March 2020, residents of London, Ontario were told by the city via email that all three of London's city-owned golf venues - Fanshawe, Thames Valley and River Road - were to be opened "as usual" when they reopened. Many golfers, including myself, bought a membership based on that information. On May 16, 2020, when city golf courses were reopened in Phase 2 of Ontario's reopening after the COVID19 lockdown, it was announced by London City Council that River Road Golf Course would not be reopened.

In speaking with personnel at other locations, I was told that the reason River Road was not opening at the same time as the other two locations was because of a lack of personnel to run and maintain the course. I was led to believe that it would just be a matter of time until personnel were recruited for River Road and the course would be reopened. Yet, on Monday, June 22, 2020, London City Council voted 8-4 to keep River Road Golf Course closed, and the decision was announced to the public on June 23rd.

It is my contention that London City Council mislead golfers into paying membership renewal fees - and new fees - that, now, are almost worthless for most of them.

Certainly I consider my membership to have little value because it is nearly impossible to get tee times to play at the two city golf venues that are open. The reason it is nearly impossible to get a tee time is because many people who have never golfed have turned to the sport. As The Washington Post reported on May 20, 2020, "Coronavirus shutdowns are making golf courses an oasis for stir-crazy Americans eager to get out and tee it up," and we know - from the crowded courses in London, Ontario - that Canadians are just as eager.

I would not have bought a membership if my renewal information had stated that River Road was to be closed, as it is the course I generally play the most often. If you are a golfer who feels cheated because you paid a membership fee for the right to golf on three venues and can only golf on two - and not very often due to increased demand -  please sign this petition to let London City Council and Mayor Ed Holder know you want River Road Golf Course to be reopened so that you - and all golfers in the city - have increased opportunities to play golf.

This petition is not just about the money paid by golfers for memberships. It is about serving the golfing and sports-minded public. City run golf opportunities have been reduced significantly with the closing of River Road, just when interest in golfing is on the rise.

River Road Golf Course must be reopened to serve the citizens of London, Ontario.

I respectfully ask you to sign this petition to help us in our efforts to get City Council to reopen it.
