Joy Muhammad started this petition to London Metropolitan police and

East and South East Asian (ESEA) communities in the U.K. are severely underrepresented despite being the third largest ethnic community in the country.

Equality and Diversity monitoring fails to address the problems that ESEA communities face. This is due to lack of statistics which do not reflect Non Sino East and South East Asian ethnic minorities at all. A prime example is that there are large Filipino and Vietnamese populations, amongst people of other ESEA Heritages in the U.K. but they are never mentioned on Equality and Diversity monitoring forms. This creates an impression that these communities do not exist in this country and therefore do not face racism and social issues. This couldn’t be further from the truth, especially with Coronavirus racism which has specifically targeted ESEA people.

Although we are more than just a tick box, it is crucial that our presence is officially heard. A simple task for admin departments to add a section for South East and East Asian members to fill in as opposed to an ‘Others’ category would help to collate demographics and information that will finally include ESEA individuals properly.
