Adrianna Saoud started this petition to London Breed

San Francisco was the first large city to ban plastic bags back in 2007. Due to COVID-19, many procedures that we were used to and loved had to be altered, one being reusable shopping bags. As a courtesy to frontline workers, reusable shopping bags were banned in all stores to prevent the spread of the virus. The idea behind this was that the material in the reusable bags may be susceptible to carrying the virus, which could be spread to anyone who came in contact with it. This led to an increase in single use plastic, as retailers were required to give out their own plastic bags rather than using the guest's reusable bags. This increase in plastic has led to increase in pollution and a setback in a lot of the "green" procedures we have obtained over the years. Although later than our surrounding counties, SF has lifted this ban, but environmentalists worry people will continue to stay in their wasteful ways. Many local businesses have taken the initiative in reducing plastic bags, such as allowing guests to bag their items on their own outside of the store, bringing the shopping cart out to their vehicle, and even providing biodegradable plastic bags. By signing this petition, you are helping me prove my point to local businesses and the city of San Francisco that regardless of COVID-19 procedures, we can find alternative ways to reduce plastic bags in our city and ensure we keep it clean!
