Increase the Amount of Youth Internships in San Francisco, CA, USA

This petition was created by eighth grade students at Gateway Middle School in San Francisco, CA with the support of two Democracy Coaches from Generation Citizen. Generation Citizen strives to empower students by providing them with a civics education that prepares them to participate in our democracy. Each class has the opportunity to determine a focus issue that impacts their community, create an action plan to help combat the issue, and carry out their action plan.
Ms. Hilarides' class has determined that they would like to collectively work to increase the amount of youth internships within the city of San Francisco. San Francisco is home to many tech companies including, but not limited to, Google, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. While this generates revenue for SF and the Bay Area at large it also increases housing prices in surrounding areas. Unfortunately, this has pushed out many SF residents to neighboring cities.
Moving forward we would like for students to have a fighting chance to remain in the city of San Francisco by equipping them with the skills to attain internships (in the tech industry and beyond) which thereby increase the likelihood of them attaining well paying jobs. In turn, they will work to disrupt the cycle of displacement currently taking place.
We are petitioning London Breed, of the Board of Supervisors, to allocate more funding and resources towards creating internships for high school students in San Francisco.
