Stop the closure of our older adults exercise classes in Waltham Forest

Age UK Waltham Forest facilitate a number of exercise and balance classes across the borough. Currently, they are funded by the London Borough of Waltham Forest, this year they have only agreed to fund classes until the end of September 2015. We have been trying to get this decision reversed and for the benefits of the classes to be recognised.
The programme costs £30k per year to run, originally we were asked to provide 11 classes for c. 200 people per week to participate. In reality, we are providing 12 classes and more than 400 pensioners per week are taking part in classes. This equates to less that £1.50 per person per week in financial support. Per head, the classes represent a small financial investment for LBWF.
In December 2014 we asked attendees to evaluate the classes. The tenor of response was overwhelmingly positive, with, for example:
- 96 per cent of respondents reporting improved flexibility;
- 96 per cent of respondents feeling more confident that they will not lose their balance when getting up from a chair;
- 93 per cent of respondents feeling more confident going down stairs indoors without losing their balance;
- 92 per cent of respondents reporting improved strength; and
- 98 per cent of respondents appreciating the social aspects of the classes.
Please sign this petition. We want the London Borough of Waltham Forest to continue funding, these classes are highly valued by older people, including those with long-term conditions. They are well attended and evidence has been submitted to the Local Authority on the positive impact of these classes on the health and wellbeing of those who attend. These classes reduce the risk of falls, improve health conditions such as blood pressure and arthritis and provide valuable social contacts for older adults who are isolated and lonely.
