Make Cyclists Stop at Traffic Lights in Tower Hamlets
Each day, I walk my children across Bow Road, east London to school. Nearly every day, we have to take our lives in our hands when a speeding cyclist jumps the traffic lights despite there being young children in front of them.
When challenged, these cyclists either verbally abuse you or ignore you completely. They speed around you within centimetres of children. It is worrying and frightening.
We have already had pedestrians knocked down and injured by a minority of selfish cyclists on this road and other areas of east London in the last twelve months. They do it because they know they can get away with it: no fine, no CCTV, no risk of being stopped and no licensed vehicle.
This problem cannot be eradicated but it can be reduced. Large, clear signage on the approach to all traffic lights on Bow Road and across Tower Hamlets school routes is a necessity, as are spot checks by police and on-the-spot fines. Its time to deter these lawbreakers and to keep our children safe. I urge you to sign this petition if you believe ALL cyclists should abide by the Highway Code and thus reduce the danger to pedestrians, especially school children.
