Ledbury residents request the promised moving funds in advance, not reimbursed

Please support the residents of the four tower blocks on the Ledbury Estate in Peckham.

Our towers have been found to have major fire safety breaches, structural gaps large enough to fit hands into/see into the flats below/next door and a questionable gas supply in terms of the risk of progressive collapse. Further collapse tests are being carried out by the council to find out if the blocks can withstand any sort of force. There are fire marshals patrolling the landings 24/7. Southwark Council have said anyone who feels unsafe and wishes to leave, can do so.

To 'assist with the cost of moving' they have stated that a sum of £5,800 will be provided. Note: this is *not* being described as a 'Home Loss Payment' (we are assuming because that would imply that Southwark have not asked residents to leave, rather just given them the option.) Southwark Council are insisting that the towers are safe, but offering all the opportunity to leave as well...

Southwark Council have indicated that the moving payment will be only credited to the residents after they've moved. Housing officers are saying it would go into rent accounts. It would then be down to the individual resident to write to the rent department and formally request to withdraw the funds via cheque, which can take weeks and weeks, if not months.

Residents are pleading with Southwark that the funds should instead be paid directly via cheque/BACS to each resident, at the time they sign their new tenancy agreements, AHEAD of moving, and with enough time to clear before their individual moving days.

Residents are already feeling unsafe, and are sad to be losing their homes, many feel they must leave for their safety. It feels like an additional punishment that residents would be forced to cover the costs of their own moves and reimbursed at a later date, additionally moving to properties with no flooring, curtains etc and being forced to live like that for quite some time.

Numerous residents who feel frightened and wished to leave, have told us that they will be unable to do so, until they've saved up enough money. They will have to remain at the towers feeling extremely scared until they manage to raise the funds needed. Many of these are the poorest and most vulnerable residents.
