Over the past 55 years Wimbledon has welcomed hundreds of thousands of language students who have chosen our beautiful borough because they love the green spaces, the great shops, cafes and other leisure facilities, and the warm welcome they have received – and because it has three British Council Accredited English Language Centres:  Wimbledon School of English (Est 1964), which has been ranked as the number one ELT school in the UK each year since 2014, Milner School of English, and CES Wimbledon.

Together we provide livelihoods for hundreds of teachers, administration staff, welfare staff, cleaning staff, host families, examiners, taxi companies and tour operators, and our students are avid consumers of everything that Wimbledon has to offer.  Our three long established ELT centres have a very significant impact on Merton as a whole. In total the financial benefit directly to the London Borough of Merton is about £6million pa.

Since the Covid-19 crisis hit we have been forced to close our doors and teach online and until travel restrictions are lifted and some form of normal life resumes, we are faced with Zero income.

Please help us to convince the London Borough of Merton to include us in the Business Rates Holiday Expanded Retail Discount 2020/21 Coronavirus Response.  This is given at the discretion of the local council, and so far, 17 councils in England have shown their support for their ELT centres by granting this relief.  Give us a fighting chance of survival so we can continue to welcome students to Wimbledon and enrich the economic & cultural life of the borough for many years to come.
