In 2021 India introduced the MTP amendment act which made access to abortion more permissible and accessible. However the laws do not go far enough as they require certain individuals who may not realise that they are pregnant until they're in an advanced stage of pregnancy and still doesn't fully legalise abortion. This forces them to go to the courts in order to seek a termination, which is a humiliating experience for the person concerned. Therefore we should get the parliament to enact a bill that would let women ( and in certain cases men) have control over their own lives and prevent unwanted pregnancies, thereby making an abortion a method of last resort. 

The gist of the bill would be as follows: 

Choice of pregnancy and free dispensation bill

·       Until the fetus has  reached point of viability, a termination shall be granted so as long as the mother requests and consents to the procedure. A termination shall be granted on the request of the father for the conception being a result of sperm theft or the result of non-consensual intercourse of the father. 

·       After the point of viability, a termination shall be granted in one of 3 cases:

o   Fetus incapable of surviving on its own outside the womb or has physical or genetic defects that shall pose a burden for its life or the life of others after birth

o   Continuing the pregnancy shall pose grave risk and injury to the mother’s life

o   The fetus was conceived as a result of non-consensual sex of either the mother or the father

·       Articles 312,315, 316 of the Indian Penal Code shall be repealed from the commencement of this act. Article 313 shall be amended to include the father's right to  seek an abortion in the aforementioed cases, but not prevent the woman to abort the fetus

- Pre-natal sex determination ban act shall still remain in force

·       For every union budget henceforth, there shall be a provision that includes funding for the following conceptives that shall be available at request free of cost to the user in every grocery store, medical store and supermarket:

o   The ‘morning-after’ pill

o   Male condoms

o   Female condoms, ‘Femidoms’

o   Intra-uterine device

o   Spermicide cream

o   Bandaids

o   Gauze

o   Betadine

o   Safety pins

o   Disposable sterile gloves 

o   N95 and paper masks

o   Surgical gloves

o   Syringes 

o   Drugs not requiring a doctors prescription 

o   Distilled water 

o   Medical tape 

o   Rubbing alcohol 

o   Digital thermometers

o   Antiseptic cream

o   tweezers
