Why this petition matters

Started by Kelly Melvin

*PBC parents, if your child is in a room that doesn’t lock, whether it’s one period or all day, you aren’t going to be notified …. So let’s get this out there and put polite but persistent pressure on the district so we can guarantee your kid has a secure room. Get those emails out.

After the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, many Florida counties were quick to implement a locked door policy. Principals will tell their teachers to lock doors but it isn’t an official policy because we have 8 schools with more than 39 doors that are not equipped with a lock.
These doors are doubling as egress rooms to meet fire code for dead end hallways. It also isn’t a statute.

It’s obviously the most basic safety mitigation there is. If Broward can pass that policy and remain compliant with it,  the SDPBC doesn’t have an excuse not to as well. There’s always a solution to every problem.

We now know tragically that the Uvalde shooter walked into an unlocked room.  No room on campus that’s occupied should be vulnerable.

The district is listening. But I’m concerned they’re going to use the conjoined doors in the back of the room as an excuse not to mitigate. It’s so, if there’s a code red that egress room full of kids can go to the class next door without entering the hallway. However that’s assuming a code red is called already. If it’s not those classes full of kids in both elementary and middle are quite literally sitting ducks. We know the district cares about our students and teachers. Please sign this petition and EMAIL!!!

We are making progress. Let’s keep it going. Can you please message the link to 3 friends or post it on your fb page or twitter?  Y’all rock!! We are doing something about an issue that should have been handled long ago. Im proud of how far we’ve come.

Let’s work with the district to get every occupied room locked. Keep your emails positive but state what you want and why you want it. Thank you!!!
