People have tended a piece of land in order to supplement their food and wages for thousands of years. It is a fundamental part of being human, and is an ancient right of everyone to be given a piece of land to cultivate. Section 25 of the allotments act 1908 states clearly that councils shall provide allotments if 6 registered voters petition for them (Small Holdings and Allotments Act 1908 (legislation.gov.uk). Shall, in law, means Must.

In light of our devastating situation with lockdowns, loss of jobs, financial instability, mental health issues, and lack of social cohesion, it has never been more important for people to get some fresh air, exercise, socialise and grow food to put on the family table. Our community has a growing list of people who want an allotment (it is my understanding that it is over 100), so I wrote to the council, requesting more land to be put aside for this purpose. Their response has been to put the rent up massively, for some it is a 400% increase, and to ignore my request for more sites. The reason given for a rental increase is cost of maintenance, but this looks to me like just a money grab as their maintenance is minimal, and will result in some giving up due to the high costs, which is completely against the whole point of the law, everyone should be able to afford one!

Allotments are a life line for many and have helped their mental health and provided healthy food. We need to hold the council to the law of the land by providing more sites, which are available - the Ridgewood Rise site is town land and has been neglected for about ten years and the field next to the hospital is ideal, but the councillors want to sell these sites to developers for their own profit. If there is something our town doesn't need any more of, it is housing that nobody can afford anyway.

Please help our community by signing this petition. Our councillors work for us and are supposed to represent our needs. We need more allotments and cheaper rents for our health and happiness
