Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency (OCIDA) has been pressuring residents to sell their rural properties on Burnet Road in Clay, New York, in order to expand the planned White Pine Commerce Park. The park is being marketed as an ideal site for a massive high-tech manufacturing facility. OCIDA now proposes to expand this industrial development to approximately 1,253 acres by acquiring an additional 800 acres to the East of the existing park. This additional acreage includes homes and farmlands of tax-paying residents of Burnet Road. The entire neighborhood would be displaced. Not only will the residents be displaced, there will be significant adverse environmental impacts. Not to mention, continued spending of tax payer dollars on a vacant park.

Many residents have lived in the same houses and farms for generations. These homes are their forever homes and they expect to retire here. OCIDA has been intimidating residents by applying pressure during these already challenging times. They repeatedly call us after we have declined to sell, and have said they will make in person visits despite the pandemic and ballooning numbers of Central New Yorkers infected with COVID-19. Residents are in fear of eminent domain. OCIDA has implied that as a possibility. We strongly oppose the use of eminent domain for county-sponsored private industry and especially in this situation.

A 2013 positive State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) declaration on this area defines the adverse environmental impacts. The roads in this area are already stressed. A massive project like this would increase traffic, produce noise and air pollution, as well as, potentially hazardous waste.

Furthering the fiscal crisis, Onondaga County Legislatures continue to approve spending on the project even with no potential buyer.

According to a Post Standard articles last paragraph, written Sept.16, 2020 by Rick Moriarty, " with the latest expenditure for the additional land, the county will have invested at least $ 5.3 million in the park."

Purchasing all the homes on Burnet Road will be another expenditure with no potential buyer in sight. The residents could lose their homes to an illusion of the vision of a massive high-tech industrial facility. We don't want to give up our homes to a massive industrial project that ends up being abandoned, as our homes sit vacant, similar to other abandoned properties in this area.

By signing this petition, we show OCIDA that we oppose a massive industrial development that would displace all the residents of Burnet Road, create adverse environmental impacts in the community and continue to use tax-payer dollars for a project with no buyer. We propose instead the development of a smaller facility that would benefit the community and have less of an environmental impact on the entire area. This would require OCIDA to use the land they already have and stop the harassment of the residents on Burnet Road.  Please join Clay Homes Preservation Coalition and visit www.saveburnetroad.org for more detailed information.
