Restore School Funding and Re-instate the Millionaire's Tax.
Restore School Funding and Re-instate the Millionaire's Tax.
The Issue
The North Rockland School district has lost over $ 9 million dollars in state funding over the past 3 years. The North Rockland School District has already lost over 225 teaching, teaching assistants and support staff. In addition:
· Class size for most AP/ Honors and regular classes are up to 30.
· We have no Physics classes ending in a Regents Exam.
· Elementary buildings have lost 23 TAs that helped with class management.
· Students who are classified are now in large classes with Consultant Teachers who have up to 25 students.
· It is possible to have up to 15 special education students in a class of 30, not including ESL and 504 students without a TA.
· There are no sports in FSS.
· No intramurals in any buildings.
· No planetarium trips for anyone.
· No field trips for any students.
· Jazz Band is gone.
· All music and choral groups are packed.
· We have more students in study halls then ever before.
· Supplies and books have been cut.
· Classes have been cut lessening the choices for our students.
· Teachers cannot copy what they need for their classes. They were told the ink is too expensive for their personal computers in the classroom.
The NYS millionaire's tax is expiring in December and the state will lose approximately $5 billion in revenue. Plus, a 2% tax cap is now in place in NYS. Without proper levels of state aid, most school district's, including North Rockland, would need to raise taxes by more than 2% just to maintain our current programs and teaching staff.
The North Rockland Teaching Association is trying to do something before it is too late. This petition will show our legislators that we want them to stop the cuts. They need to know that the children in our community will be hurt if they do not act now.
Please forward this petition to anyone that you can think of that may be interested. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.
