Many Police, Firefighters and Military Men are sacrificing their lives every single day. They give up time from their families to help the country or community. They put their lives on the line every single day. Many agencies in the United States (to include Colorado) DO NOT pay their staff overtime until a certain amount of time has been put in. There is an agency in southern Colorado that has a 28 day pay period where (at minimum) 160 hours is the minimum time you can work. (We all know police, fire and military work isn’t a “perfect” 8am-5pm job.) This Office pays straight time for the first 11 hours of overtime; meaning after 171 hours, the Law Enforcement Officers then begin accruing overtime. This is Federally legal through the Department of Labor. Why is it ok to single our first responders out? This needs to be changed. Agencies that do not implement this is proven to bring the morale up and make the men and women who serve and protect us to work harder and have a little extra for what they do.
