Save our Hedges

Save our Hedges

I recently found out that my SBHA want to rip out the hedge in our communal garden to put grass down. This is because apparently one person has complained about the hedge running along side her property and also the SBHA can't find anyone to cut the hedge. This is strange as there are numerous advertisements on Facebook for garden jobs. I'm sure they could contract someone to keep it tidy as part of their " Big Plan".
The hedge while not massive is home to numerous animals. Thousands of insects and bugs, moths and butterflies sleep in there. Bats swoop over every night trying to get the bugs that come out. So a valuable food source will be taken away. It's crammed full of birds that nest in there every year and hedgehogs use it for shelter. So it's not "just a hedge". It's a home. Hedgehogs are already endangered due to preditation and loss of natural habitat. I help feed the birds and hedgehogs because of this. I'm gutted to learn that our own wee haven for them all is to just be ripped out like it's nothing. It's not even for development but for grass. How many other of our wee hedges are going to suffer the same fate?? It needs to stop. Housing authorities need to spend a bit more time at looking at how to save these havens for our wildlife and finding someone to look after them and not just rip them out because they can't be bothered.
