Prevent the new development at fell lane, save the scout hut and surrounding woodland area

We would like to oppose the building development of houses in the Fell Lane area of Keighley in West Yorkshire.

This development would result in the uncertainty of our scouting community, and although we are grateful for the offer of the relocated hut being currently planned for, we have no solid guarantee of the facilities on offer. We are concerned we may end up with much reduced facilities or even the possibility of no facilities at all.

All too often comunity spaces are promised and agreed at planning stages. But what we fear is that sadly the promises are not always kept. Further down the line the situation can often have a very different outcome. This is not just about the hut itself either but also the surrounding green land, the impact on local residents that currently enjoy the quiet natural habitats that they live beside. We fear this will be lost forever. We enjoy a wonderful quiet woodland setting in a very pleasant valley and do not want this to become a thing of the past. We believe the area should be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

The 1st Keighley scouting group at Fell Lane is a long standing group with a strong community bond, providing kids with opportunity, structure, access to life skills and experiences and has done so for many years. With regards to the proposed plans there is very limited information and little guarantee of a solid bound commitment to provide the required facilities. Plans show no outdoor area as we currently enjoy, no room for parking, storage for our equipment and no indication of its size or amenities. We are concerned we may be forced into limited facilities that are not as well equipped and less generous than what we currently enjoy. The Scouting Group uses its outdoor area regularly with campfires, archery, games, assault courses and an annual family BBQ event, all these things require outdoor space. The children enjoy regular camps and sleepovers too, the new location has no outdoor area to do this and we also have safety concerns as to the location and the quality of the land at the once industrial site. We require facilities that are fit for purpose in order to provide a varied outdoor programme. This development will reduce our ability to run outdoor activities and therefore impact on the group.

That said concerns over these plans are not only related to scouting but for the local community too. The development will impact the local area in many ways increasing its traffic flow and adding strain on local schools. It will also affect other users of the hut such as daily kiddicare, a great asset to many local families. Not to mention the elimination of our natural outdoor space including spoiling our open views along local walks and nearby footpaths, fields and woodland areas. The area is well used with the river being used for daily dog walk, or for family trips out picnicking and paddling, it would be a shame to see it overshadowed by yet more unsightly buildings. These outdoor natural facilities are full of wildlife and their presence benefits many local people and their families immensely. We feel the site has a lot to offer as it is and we do not want to see all our local environment turning into yet more building developments. Instead we need to be teaching our young kids the value of our environment and how to enjoy the close links to nature we have already in our unique existing location.

Just to add the hut is also used daily for childcare before and after school clubs, is available for hire by the community and is regularly used for a polling station and much more
