There is a lot of talk about lowering speed limits in NZ due to our roads being dangerous. 99.9% of NZ roads are safe to drive at the current speed limits, all that is required is that drivers concentrate on the task at hand which staying on your side of the white line, not running into other traffic & not driving too slow. Another huge problem in main centres is that you must aware that pedestrians are a huge hazard because they do not concentrate on not getting run over, the authorities are at a loss to stop pedestrians getting run over, all they can come up with is to slow the trafffic down which does not solve the problem which is pedestrians walking out in front of cars, trucks & buses etc. You might get away with your life after being hit by a car at 20k but if you are hit by a bus & truck you will likely be killed so the solution to the problem is to make it illegal to jaywalk & if someone is caught jaywalking while using a cellphone or wearing headphones they should be given fines & treated as if they were using cellphones in a car.

Driving at the speed limit is easily achieved every day in NZ by literally millions of drivers going about their daily business without incident while driving at the current speed limits, distraction is the biggest problem on roads today as can be evidenced by the statistics that have found that 75% of all deaths on NZ roads could not be attributed to speed, alcohol, drugs or anything else for that matter other than a driver did something dumb & 80% of  deaths were all under the speed limit so the idea that lowering the speed limit is flawed. The authorities need to get their heads out of the sand & realize that if you have a problem ( road deaths ) & year after year you carry on doing the same thing ( target speeding drivers ) to rectify the problem & it doesn't improve ( the road toll is ever increasing since 2014 because of one year wofs & driver inattention ) then you need to try something else. The most effective course of action would be to target those that are not concentrating on driving & making mistakes on the roads that cost lives along with all the injuries, loss of productivity & cost in terms of vehicle damage. Also if drivers are unable to drive at the posted speed limits they are competent at driving & need more training. Why would you make it a requirement for anyone obtaining a drivers license to drive at the speed limit during the practical driving test ( and fail them if they drive too slow or too fast ) then allow them to drive at whatever speed they like below the speed limit once they obtain a drivers license, they are a menace on the roads.
