Somerset County Council want to make Somerset into a unitary authority. This means disbanding the two tier system of local government in the county.
SCC have voted through a business case which states that Somerset will lose the 4 District Councils and will be run from one Council based in Taunton.
Under this unitary authority, new local government systems called Local Community Networks will be set up across the county, which may involve Parish/Town/County Council members. The plans regarding finances and services under this new system are not clear. What is clear is that much responsibility will lie with volunteers. Some areas of the county will struggle to keep their communities alive and thriving through lack of resources.
The plans have been drawn up during lockdown and are being rushed through at a time when many people are dealing with issues relating to job security, getting businesses back up and running, caring for relatives and fighting a global pandemic.
The promises of significant savings across the County cannot be relied on and neither can the promises of improved services for our most vulnerable in Somerset.
Becoming a unitary authority is a gamble.
