Expand your Naturally Imperfect produce line nationwide!

Billions of tons of misshapen, blemished or just plain ugly produce gets wasted worldwide because companies want to attract buyers with food that looks good. But anyone who grows their own food knows this "ugly" food is just as good as the perfectly shaped produce.
Loblaw Companies Inc. has started a pilot project to sell their "ugly" produce at a 30% discount, in Superstores and No-Frills stores in Ontario and Maxi stores in Quebec, according to the Toronto Star. This is a great initiative, and it needs to be expanded nationwide!
This not only addresses problems of food waste, but also makes produce more affordable for anyone who is low-income. This includes students, families, single parents, and people living on Income Assistance. Non-profit organizations dedicated to feeding the homeless will also benefit. By expanding this product line, Loblaw will be helping many of the most vulnerable in our society.
This also makes perfect business sense. In terms of overhead costs, it is very little — just the same packaging and shipping costs that any other produce would have, market share would almost certainly go up, and the PR benefits would be great. The bottom line is, Loblaw has a great opportunity here for profit growth.
Too many times I see petitions on here fighting against horrible situations. It's great to be able to petition to expand an already great initiative.
