My son, a junior at Live Oak High School, has been harassed consistently for his choices to let his hair grow out. He is told he cannot wear a “man-bun” when there are males of a different ethnicity who are not being questioned. He is told he cannot have his hair braided back when, once again, males of other ethnicities/ races have not been addressed. This is an on-going battle of 5 years, and his education is being stripped due to our choice to allow our son to express himself. This is an act of DISCRIMINATION in the eyes of religion and race. We believe in the image of Christ having mid-length hair, and so we should be allowed to represent ourselves in the image of our lord. The length of a child’s hair should not determine the value of his/her education. Our children are sent to school to be educated; NOT to be judged on personal preference..such as hairstyle. His hair is kept out of his face (“man-bun” or braided) and does not disrupt his line of site nor the ability to see his face. His hair does not distract other students from learning and should not distract a teacher, as it is their job to Simply, TEACH. As parents, we should have the right to make these decisions for our own children, without judgement or ridicule. STAND UP FOR THE RIGHTS OF OUR CHILDREN TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES INSIDE AND OUT OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
