Cindy Goldstein started this petition to Livingston NJ board of education

Dear Members of the Board/Administration -

We raise our families in Livingston to avail ourselves of a highly regarded education. We emphatically believe that there is NO substitute for a qualified and engaged educator. Our school district’s rankings are based on the quality of these instructors.

As of the July 28th BOE meeting it was disclosed that we have a sizable portion of our staff who "qualify" for FMLA (100+) and will choose to be on leave if they are required to be on site.  Further, understanding that teachers have and continue to submit leave/early retirement requests and knowing that staff may use sick/vacation time without notice, we are concerned that the quality of instruction we face this coming school year will not hold to the typical standard delivered by the Livingston school district.  In addition, to hear that the district is taking steps to qualify aides as substitutes to stand in the shoes of these seasoned professionals, simply put, is UNACCEPTABLE. The potential shortage these departures/leaves will have on our district will be felt forever, above and beyond what will undoubtedly be a different learning experience during this rapidly approaching school year.

While you continue to work through what the options might look like, we ask that the board and administration take full liberty in interpretation of the guidelines to support and provide the right pathways for us to retain our staff.  Rather than operating in an either/or position as to how they must work, we expect that the district will consider ways to schedule teachers to meet the needs of both those who wish to be in person and those who wish to be remote. As published on Page 49-50, The RoadBack: Restart and Recovery Plan For Education,  (https://www.nj.gov/education/reopening/NJDOETheRoadBack.pdf it is our understanding that the state required "in person" instruction allows flexibility for each community to define what these plans may look like.

It is said, "When you are given only Option A and B, always look for C".  We are asking the board and the administration to take due care in looking for Option C. The consequences of sticking to an A/B approach is not in character with the actions of a leading district which prides itself on the quality of the education delivered by its teachers.

Sincerely,

Livingston residents supporting excellence in Livingston NJ education
