HMS Walkout; A New Discussion

The students of Heritage Middle School participated in a nationwide walkout on Tuesday, March 14, 2018, for 17 minutes. We, students of Heritage Middle School, are writing this petition to voice our disappointment of the walkout that was conducted. We feel that the message that we tried to send was suppressed and that our voices as students who are unsafe in a school zone are not being heard enough. We feel that there wasn't a big enough discussion about the recent events in Parkland, Florida. This topic is especially sensitive for students, as it happened in a school environment. This shooting was different than others because it creates new discussions every single day, but it is very important that this conversation starts within our school. This walkout was orchestrated by administration and authorities, but we feel that it should have been conducted entirely by students. This petition is not meant to offend any of the students or faculty who took the time out of their day to make this walkout possible. The walkout was a good start to a larger conversation about gun violence, gun control, and school shootings, one that we need to have in school.
