SAY NO TO LIVERPOOL'S ZIP WIRE

This petition had 2,495 supporters

Zip World has been granted planning permission to put up a 450 foot zip wire between St John's Beacon and the roof of Central Library in Liverpool City Centre.

The planning application was formally opposed by all three local councillors, residents and local businesses, as well as the War Memorials Trust and St George's Hall Charitable Trust.  Concerns were also raised by Historic England and Merseytravel

The plans would involve commercialising Liverpool's Central Library, taking away much-needed public space from the library currently used for books, music, learning and IT.

The zip wire would run over St John's Gardens, a terraced sculpture park at the heart of Liverpool's UNESCO World Heritage Site in the St George's Quarter.  St John's Gardens, to the west of Grade I-listed St George's Hall, is an oasis of calm and contemplation in a busy City Centre and home to many statues and memorials, including to the King's Liverpol Regiment.  Next to St John's Gardens on the corner of William Brown Street and Old Haymarket, stands the Hillsborough Monument Memorial, dedicated to the memory of the 96 football fans who died in the Hillsborough Disaster.   Liverpool City Council's website describes St John's Gardens as 'a beautiful place to relax or have a picnic and escape the hustle and bustle of the City Centre'.

Please ask Liverpool City Council and Zip World not to proceed with these proposals and to work to identify a more appropriate location for this attraction.
