The Issue
My name is Love, and I am a middle school student on a mission to help more young people rediscover the joy of reading. Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes because it allows me to learn new perspectives, spark my creativity, and explore ideas beyond my own experiences. I believe books can have a powerful impact on confidence, curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking.
Through this project, I want to encourage a healthier and more meaningful relationship between young people and reading. I believe children and teens do not inherently dislike reading; too often, it is presented as a requirement instead of something enjoyable and personal.
This issue extends beyond whether young people enjoy reading. Across the United States alone, millions of children and teens are not reading proficiently, which can make it harder to understand complex ideas, think critically, and succeed academically. When reading is viewed primarily as an assignment rather than a source of discovery and enjoyment, many students miss opportunities to develop strong literacy skills. Encouraging young people to read for pleasure can help build the confidence, comprehension, and lifelong learning habits they need to thrive.
By signing this petition, you are supporting childhood and teen literacy and helping advocate for the idea that reading should be seen as a choice that inspires people, not simply a chore assigned to them. My goal is to collect 20 signatures from people who believe reading should be more engaging, accessible, and enjoyable for young people everywhere.
