In Kansas, The Olathe School District is attempting to go back full-time, in person for all grade levels starting next Monday (March 1st 2021) and is planning to continue full time in person learning after our spring break mid-March. The Olathe School district is refusing to listen to concerned teachers, students and parents. They are letting the voice of a few parents who want their children to compete in sports be the voice of reason. The Olathe School district decided on this policy behind closed doors without informing the public, and has since refused to enter conversations about the transition with the districts teachers or leaders. The School Board is ignoring students' voices and needs thus endangering the health of both students and teachers. There are an estimated 1600 students returning in person to each high school at the same time. this will include 300 students eating lunch at a time and often 30 students or more per class especially in core classes like English and math. There is NO room to social distance desks in classes and students are having to sit shoulder to shoulder to fit all children in classrooms. We cannot continue to allow the few to speak over the masses and allow the Olathe District School Board to continue to endanger our valued teachers and students. No students are vaccinated and most teachers don't even have the first dosage of the vaccine, this is not safe. Numbers are rising and are going to spike again after the spring break travel. According to an infographic from the Johnson County Website, the highest 7 day case total has been the 10-19 year olds for over a month solid, COVID-19 is still circulating and high-school students are being hit the hardest. We need to remain in hybrid and online learning or COVID will only continue to spread and take more experiences away from us. As students, we must think about our own well being and the well being of those we care about - this is NOT safe.
