Protect the Ontario 2015 Health and Physical Education Curriculum

As parents of Withrow Avenue Junior Public School students, we are opposed to the repeal of the 2015 Health and Physical Education Curriculum. Returning to the 1998 curriculum leaves our children woefully unprepared for the world around them.

The 2015 curriculum was developed, after extensive research and consultation, in response to a need. The existing lesson plans were distressingly inadequate and did not address the issues facing our children today. The 1998 document does not give our children the tools or the language to begin to build an inclusive society. It does not help this generation protect themselves or make healthy decisions about their own bodies and sexuality.

Returning to the old curriculum means ignoring family diversity and marriage equality. There are children at every school who live in same-sex parent households and the 1998 curriculum ignores their family experience, rather than presenting it as normal.
