Approximately 40% of all Alaskans have either no access to broadband or limited, expensive access to slow internet. In 2020, this is unacceptable. We know that access to broadband improves access to health care, distance education, economic opportunity and overall, a better quality of life.

Rural Alaskans are affected most, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many communities learned via word-of-mouth about State of Alaska HSS health mandates and safety recommendations, often days after those in urban areas were informed. Eventually, school went into session and many children either have no access at home or shared a cellular connection. Again, the lack of broadband affected rural Alaskans disproportionately.

The solution is not more subsidies for schools and health clinics. The solution is expanding middle mile infrastructure and literally connecting more communities to the internet. New infrastructure MUST require rapid deployment, low cost to the customer and wide coverage. It must also deliver broadband as defined by the FCC - at least 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up.

The "digital divide" in Alaska is getting wider every day. Rural Alaskans deserve access to something most Americans take for granted - affordable broadband.
