Nathan Irwin started this petition to Lipscomb University and

Lipscomb University's current rule on dorm visitations of opposite genders are inconvenient and unfair. Personally, as a male with a majority female friends, spending time with them is a struggle due to the fact we can only see each other in public areas, which are usually crowded by other students experiencing the same issue of only seeing opposite gender friends in inconvenient places that are offered.

The current situation of a set day, once a week for everyone visit to the opposite genders dorm for three hours is pointless and insincere. Most the time, students don't even go simply because it would be a crammed mess of people from all over campus all trying to see their friends within those short couple hours in the evening. We students should be treated like the adults we are rather than be limited and restrained like so.

Making the visitation rules more lenient I believe will lead to a better student experience. Being able to freely see their male/female friends in the comfort of a private dorm room is much more enjoyable at times rather than cramming into a single couch in a lobby to watch a movie, or occupy multiple tables to play a card game. With numerous RA's and dorms that aren't too large, it would be easy for the visiting students to be checked on with a simple walk down the hallways.

A great example of a functional visitation rule is one I've experienced at Belmont University. You are required to be checked in by the person you're visiting, give a type of ID to the desk clerk, and you are given a tag that is to be returned upon leaving. The visitation hours are throughout the day until a certain hour in the evening, which give students a place to go to study or unwind with friends that is comfortable and not crowded.
