In Support of Lindbergh School District Libraries
We, the undersigned parents, students, staff and residents of the Lindbergh School District wish to affirm our support for the Lindbergh School District librarians and the equitable access of literature in our district libraries.
We stand against the banning of books and the deliberate targeting of literature featuring diverse perspectives from marginalized communities. Parents who do not want their children to read certain titles are free to restrict their own student's access to these books. They do not have the right to restrict access to all students.
The district is working diligently on continuing to create a community of inclusion, equity, and diversity. Even considering the removal of diverse titles erodes this work. As one Lindbergh student so bravely pointed out at the October Board of Education meeting, "books like [the ones being challenged] helped me see that I needed to change how I looked at myself. They showed me that I can be comfortable at school or anywhere." What are we saying to students from diverse backgrounds when we form a committee to remove literature about their existence?
Meg Medina, award-winning author and literary expert states:
“To pull books from a school library because of the discomfort they create in adults is a recipe for disaster. It erodes the trust young people have in the adults in their lives and pushes them to secrecy. It undermines the studied opinion of professional librarians and educators. It supports a false idea that there is one version of life that is acceptable. And, it denigrates the work of the authors who are brave enough to name experiences that are difficult and real.”
We wholeheartedly agree.
