With the country hopefully opening up (all being well) over the coming weeks and months we should do everything we can to help get local businesses to optimise trade in a way that continues to be safe while the effects of Covid-19 reduce. Traders from St. Mary's Hill up to and including St. John's St. would benefit from those streets being accessible exclusively to pedestrians for a few hours at the weekends while allowing more space for social distancing. Cafes and restaurants could also use the additional space for outdoor eating in warmer weather. There's good evidence to show that opening pedestrian access increases footfall for traders and this area of town in particular suffers from having has very little footway.

This route serves as a relief road when the A1 is blocked but it could be easily opened up again if needed.
