Why this petition matters

Started by Gavin Bren

As you may know, the opioid crisis has rampaged throughout the world, especially the U.S.A. in the past few years. Last year in the United States, alone, about 107,000 citizens passed away due to overdoses on opioids.

One of the most popular of these was Hydrocodone, which is sold over the counter nearly everywhere. So to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs like these, I've come up with a solution; limit the amount of pills being sold at a time.

The main reason why Hydrocodone is being used on the streets is because they are sold in bulk to patients who need them or, in some cases, just people who will pay the right price. I think that pharmacies should require two things:

  1. Documentation saying that the drugs are needed, signed by a doctor.
  2. a maximum of 10 pills being sold at a time.

Now this may seem silly, but documentation stating that the person actually needs the drugs for a medical purpose may stop people using opioids for non-medical purposes would be driven away. As for the maximum amount, it should keep the patients who actually need them from selling them for a few dollars on the street.

If we reach our goal of 750 signatures, we will send the petition to Massachusetts Senator Bruce Tarr of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The hope is that this proposition will be drafted into law by the Senate of Massachusetts.
