Some African governments have faux democracies where presidents run for re-election every 4 years and win every time and thereby end up in power for greater than 30 years. With such established control over the system, opponents really do not stand a chance.

People in the U.S. may read this and think our democracy is better, we had the sense to limit a president's ability to run for office to 2 terms so that no president holds power over the people for a lifetime. However, U.S. senators do. 

There are members of senate who have been in power for greater than 30 years. Members of senate who hold so much power over the system that they can win elections over and over again. Members of senate so secure in their power that they can choose to pander to special interests like the NRA to the detriment of American children.

It is time to limit the senate's reach. Limit senators' ability to run for office to 2 terms such that a senator can hold office for a maximum of 12 years. 

I think Victor Berger expressed the sentiment about the senate well in 1911... "Whereas the Senate in particular has become an obstructive and useless body, a menace to the liberties of the people, and an obstacle to social growth; a body, many of the Members of which are representatives neither of a State nor of its people, but solely of certain predatory combinations, and a body which, by reason of the corruption often attending the election of its Members, has furnished the gravest public scandals in the history of the nation. . . ."
