We are facing nationwide epidemic of suicide, depression, and debilitating anxiety. In 2018, over 1,735,350 people were diagnosed with Cancer. It's no secret, hearing the word "Cancer" triggers anxiety and PTSD, in particular for those who are actively fighting, survivors and their families. Its why so many refer to it as the "C" word or anything else just not "Cancer".

As my father was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, I have noticed a significant increase in prescription drug commercials and cancer hospital advertisements. Every time we turn on the television or radio we cannot help but flinch and pretend we don't hear an advertisement for cancer drugs, prescription drugs (which may result in cancer), or a hospital trying to attract new patients every 3-5 minutes. It's difficult enough having to fight your worst nightmare daily, but try turning to a place of refuge (television/radio) only to be reminded again and again of your battle. And we wonder why depression, suicide, anxiety rates are rapidly growing? Look at the correlation between increased prescription drug advertisements and decline in our mental health.

While millions of American households are fighting a daily battle against this disease; they are bombarded with the endless pursuit of pharmaceutical corporations and medical institutions trying to swoon them. A normal, healthy individual is not sitting in their living room, preemptively taking notes on random cancer drugs and hospitals. Someone who is in need of cancer treatment, needs extensive and personalized treatment with their doctor, not based on which pharmaceutical company or hospital has the biggest marketing budget but which one is the most effective based on trials, studies and data.

Following in suit of, The Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1970 officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio , the prescription drug and hospital advertisements are endangering the health and wellbeing of the public.  Let's work together to put drug / medical facility suggestions where they belong, between a patient and their doctor; and out of the living room. We are facing a public health crisis and this is a small step in the right direction.
