Jennifer Ramirez started this petition to Limestone District School Board and

We are nursing students advocating for the importance of healthy eating, to prevent childhood obesity.

An estimated 170 million children, less than 18 years of age, worldwide are overweight or obese, this including 31 % of Canadian youth from the ages of 2-17. Childhood obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, suffer from discrimination, low self-esteem and other social and psychological problems. We found that 7 out of 10 children between the ages of 4 to 8 years old eat less than the recommended number of 5 servings of vegetables and fruit per day. It is crucial for healthier eating habits for school aged children as we discovered between the ages of 6-12 years old is when children develop eating habits that carry with them for the rest of their lives.

There have been links between nutrition and academic performance, in that if you  maintain a healthy diet, it will improve memory, problem solving skills, and creative abilities. School environment affects healthy eating in children through foods that are available and teacher/peer influences. Schools are an ideal setting to establish and promote healthy eating in children. As a result, providing healthier meals to students, we have initiated this petition because it would be the most effective way to advocate for the students.
