The Financial Holds prior to registration are disenfranchising the student body, especially low income and minority students. I am a low income, black student, that does not have the means to rush into a payment plan or set up a loan without a cosigner. This puts students like me at a tremendous disadvantage as opposed to students with the financial backing to pay for their education upfront.

The problem with this Financial Hold is that it prioritizes the rich students. Students that can set up a payment plan and put down a percentage of the thousands of dollars in tuition and fees will be able to select their classes before anyone else can. This action will further privatize higher education, making it even more inaccessible for struggling students who cannot afford this privilege. Once the students who have cleared their Financial holds register for classes, there may not be any openings available, which leaves students with a small amount of classes to take or none at all. Many of the students at LIM are not just balancing classes, but also multiple jobs that they need in order to pay for their education. These students need these holds removed to schedule their work hours around their class schedule to graduate from this institution and pay for it at the same time. With the existence of these financial holds, it is simply saying that LIM College does not value its low income, working class and minority students, as much as it does its affluent and financially secure students. If these holds are not removed from the students accounts, many will be forced to leave sooner rather than later. Statistically speaking, it has been proven that students of low income backgrounds are less likely to return to higher education once leaving. Education is a right and should be treated as such, not as a privilege. If these holds were to be removed, students could register for next semester's courses with ample time to set up a payment plan with the school prior to classes starting. I am also a student worker and as such I am granted the option of priority registration in order to organize my class schedule around my work schedule. This is incredibly important since my job at this school is my only source of income to pay for the expenses of living in the city and going to this school. In order to survive being a college student, receive excellent grades, and pursue my career, this financial hold needs to be removed. Not just from my account, but the rest of the student body.

This hold is in no way beneficial to any of the students who go to LIM College. Its entire purpose is for this for-profit school to make the most money it can from its students. This is an attack on the underprivileged student population at LIM. If LIM wants to affirm its belief that it is diverse, it needs to make it its mission to encompass economic and financial diversity. I understand that this institution is just looking out for its investments, but do not neglect us. The best investment you could ever make is in the next generation, the future, your LIM student body. As well as we are willing and able to reason, we are just as ready to fight for our education.
