Too many DIY television shows have enabled people to believe they can 'change over a power point', or 'make their own light fitting', and 'install their own wiring'. If a retailer can sell an electrical accessory to members of the public (unlicensed workers), then lets make the Retailer accountable. Fairly simple approach.

Case Example. If you can hire a vehicle from Bunnings, you are required to hand over your drivers licence and take out compulsory insurance policy, before you can drive out the door. A vehicle is a weapon and can kill, hence your details and compulsory insurance are required upon this transaction. Electrical equipment is no different. You may not be able to see electricity, but it can kill.

Please sign my petition to make Retailers accountable. As an Electrical Contractor I am required to obtain public liability insurance and hold an Electrical licence. It should be compulsory for a retailer to obtain a licence and address at the point of sale, requesting where the electrical equipment will be installed at. The retailer can then forward this information on to our regulator in Victoria, Energy Safe to follow up on Certificate of Electrical Safety. To ensure the job is completed by a competent and appropriately licensed tradesperson.
