Why this petition matters

Started by Amy Chu

On behalf of my son...

My name is Nathan and I am 9 yrs old. I would like to petition the city of Calgary to put lights at the intersection of Evanston View and Symons Valley Parkway next to the park. The reason why is because there have been 12 accidents reported to the police in the last 10 months. When I spoke to the police department, they said there are likely many more that have not been reported.

I have seen 2 of these accidents and I am very scared and concerned for my neighbors. One of the accidents I saw involved a car and a U-haul. The car was in the middle of the intersection with its front smashed in and the U-haul drove onto the sidewalk and went through a fence before it was stopped by a tree. The other one I witnessed was a car hitting a sign and driving onto the sidewalk until it was also stopped by a tree. If anyone had been walking on the sidewalk during these times they would have been seriously injured.

I always feel nervous crossing the road at Evanston View and Symons Valley Parkway. Even with the pedestrian crossing signs, often the cars zoom past without stopping and I have to hold on to my parents’ hands so I can get across safely. I have been stuck in the middle of the intersection because cars do not stop. I would like the city to consider putting lights at this intersection before anyone gets seriously injured.

Thank you for your time in considering signing this petition.

Regards,

Nathan
