Ruth Murphy started this petition to Lidl Kilcock and

The environment is in a state of degradation. Mindless consumerism and economic growth have led to pollution of our freshwater systems, seas and the air we breathe. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2018 Ireland generated 2.9 million tonnes of municipal waste, up 3.5% on 2017. Although 38% of this waste was recycled, 14% went to landfill. The overall trends indicate that Ireland faces significant challenges to meet the upcoming EU recycling targets for 2020 to 2035 (www.epa.ie).

There is no shop in Kilcock that enables staples like rice, pasta, nuts, dried fruit etc. to be bulk purchased using the buyer’s containers and thereby eliminating the need to use unrecyclable plastic. Lidl and SuperValu are the largest supermarkets in Kilcock, Co. Kildare. We want Lidl and SuperValu Kilcock to;

  • ·         Provide a packaging free dispenser for rice, pasta, nuts, dried fruit, flour, oats etc. similar to the trial launched by Aldi at Ulverston, Cumbria.
  • ·         Significantly reduce packaging on all fruit and vegetables.
  • ·         Ensure all boxes of loose produce clearly display the origin.

Plastic packaging costs money for the producer to manufacture and for the consumer to dispose of.  Let’s enable everybody to reduce plastic waste and know where produce originates from.
