Boots is a young female cat who came to the Licking County Humane Society pregnant. She was put into a foster home of one of their volunteers, name unknown. Since giving birth to her OWN 4 kittens, Boots has since NURSED and cared for TWENTY FOUR other kittens. A nursing mother taking on an orphaned kitten, or two, is very common. However, a young nursing mother continually being used to nurse litter after litter is way too much. That is abusing the fact that she is lactating for your own selfish purposes. While it is NOT selfish to save all these kittens, it is WONDERFUL, it is selfish to expect Boots to do all this work when she deserves a loving home and to be free of having to continually care for litters of kittens. Ending Boots' suffering and getting her SPAYED and adopted is our ultimate goal, but we would also like to stop Licking County Humane Society from being able to allow a lactating mother nurse SO many kittens.
In animal rescue, specifically cat rescue, our ultimate goal is to spay/neuter so these cats dont have to live a life of continually nursing and caring kittens, and to help the cat overpopulation. I find it so wonderful that this shelter has helped so many kittens this kitten season, but i think they need to reassess their policies for nursing mothers. No cat - indoor, outdoor, feral, should have to suffer nursing over 20 cats.
Please, Licking County Humane Society - we BEG you to change this policy, SPAY Boots and allow her to be adopted into a loving home where she is spoiled and loved.
