I have been thinking about the nation and how the economy isn't the strongest - and how the nation is riddled with problems of poverty and unemployment. But I think something that should be looked into is the pricing of license centres. It wasn't until I failed my drivers that I realized just how costly the whole procedure is. Most jobs require an employee to have some sort of license (usually code 8 or 10) and in order to do so, they have to book a learner's test. That test is R150 (well I am not too sure about national pricing, but that is what I paid). I obtained my learners first-time and paid an additional R60 (so R210 in total). The next step is to book driving lessons and each of those cost approximately R150-R250. The schools usually have packages and those include the car hire fee for the day of the test - in total, the lessons amount to around R2000+ (depending on initial fees of lessons). Then upon booking a test, you have to pay R294 for Code 8 (not too sure about others, but I did code 8 so I can use that from experience) and then (should you pass) you HAVE to pay R216 to get your temporary card. That is already R510 for the process of booking for the test- ON TOP of the expenditure from the lessons and the learners. With all this money being spent, it leaves a lot of pressure on the individual to pass first time. Some people succeed with this pressure, whilst others don't. The issue is when you do not succeed the first time because you are then required to rebook and that means spending another R294. I think this is an issue because for many South Africans, R294 is enough to buy groceries for a month and since many jobs place emphasis on a person having a license in order to be employed, that could be a cause for concern. Lets say a person fails 3 times, that is basically R982 (almost R1000) and a lot of people can't afford that. Even middle-class people would feel the pinch of R1000 casually going out the pocket. I understand that there is a system in place (and I am not complaining about the point system or anything - although I have heard quite a few complaints about some of the 'things you can be penalized for' -  that is understandable) but I do not think it is fair to charge such a steep price for something that is basically a MUST if you want to secure employment - especially given the country's economic situation. At the very least, if someone fails a test, the fee should be less because it is not a new applicant (I think the system is linked nationally but I could be wrong). I really believe something needs to be done about this license pricing and that is what inspired me to form this petition. Another solution is that they do not charge at all (i.e it must be free) for people re-booking. A third idea is that they drop the price and make it way cheaper than R294 - that way, more of the population can utilize the service without feeling an economic pinch.
