Eritrean IN Edmonton started this petition to Embassy Embassy of the State of Libya in Canada and

Eritrean  refugees and asylum seekers in Libya  were  rounded up and cramped  in overcrowded detention camps around the capital Tripoli where assault ,rape and kidnappings is rife. A large scale operation  by the Libyan security started in early october  in the town of Gargaresh ,12 kilometers west of the captial Tripoli .During the violent crackdown  refugees and asylum seekers including pregnant women and children were  taken from their makeshift houses and places of worship and detained in  overcrowded and unsafe  camps . There are credible reports that 6 refugees were  killed and another 15 injured by Libyan authorities during the violent arrests and subsequent attempt of desperation by the detainees to escape the dentention center. Many others including valnurable women and children are now with out any shelter, food ,water or medicines living on the streets of Tripoli as thier make shift shelters were demolished by authorities .The situation is beyond desperate  and without any help is getting worse by the day .This petition was set up by the residents of the city of Edmonton concerned and worried by the level of violence perpetuated against a helpless and valnerable group of Refugees and asylum seekers in Libya. The purpose of this petition is to pressure Libyan authorities to safeguard humane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers ,respect their rights under international law  and also to to appeal to the UNHCR and other actors to assist in Humanitarian aid and  resume Humanitarian flights out of Libya ,which was stopped by Libyan authorities over a year ago.
