Liberty Common School is a publicly funded charter school in Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colorado.  As a publicly funded school in the state of Colorado, LCS has a duty to its students to protect them from discrimination regardless of “disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, or ancestry".

The LCHS (the 7th-12th grade portion of the school) Student-Parent Handbook prohibits bullying, defined as:

1. Any written or verbal expression, or physical or electronic act or gesture, or a
pattern thereof, that is intended to coerce, intimidate, or cause any physical,
mental, or emotional harm to any student; or,
2. Aggressive behavior that results in an imbalance of power, such as but not limited
to a student’s use of physical strength, a credible threat to use force or coercion,
access to embarrassing information, and/or popularity to control or harm others.

While this definition of bullying could include racially motivated, as well as homophobic or otherwise prejudiced attacks, both verbal and physical, the fact that LCS does not have an explicit policy on addressing racist or otherwise discriminatory remarks automatically creates a deficit in student protection.

The goal of this petition is to encourage the Liberty Common Board of Directors to consider updating the policies of the school to create an actual policy to address racism and other forms of discriminatory harassment within Liberty Common School, with the hope that an explicit policy would lead to greater enforcement against this behavior.
