St John's (the former Parish Church of Saint John the Evangelist) is a beautiful and imposing building on Liscard Road that forms part of Wallasey's heritage. Built in 1832–33 it is a Grade 2 listed building that is of significant architectural and historic importance.
It is of great concern to members of the community that this property is not being maintained to a reasonable standard by its owner. It is believed that this building is at serious risk of decay, vandalism or at worst arson. As members of the community and local residents we do not need to remind the council of the unfortunate loss of Liscard Hall - Central Park, an unforgivable act of vandalism at the detriment to the community that could have been avoided had necessary action been taken.
St Johns Church has been empty for over 20 years with its sale in 2004 and planning granted in 2006. Since then nothing has been done to protect the building against decay, no remedial work has been done to protect existing masonry or the roof structure with the council or English heritage having no record on its state of repair.
In addition to the declining condition of the building a WW1 War Memorial is being neglected in the continued ignorance and dispossession of this estate by its owner. This is not how we as a community expect to see monuments to our lost heroes and ancestors treated.
It is fair to say that the continued misuse of this property is damaging to the community and a contributing cause to a local demand for quality housing and community space. It is reasonable to assume that if this property was converted to dwelling houses or better still adapted for the community as part of a CLT (Community Land Trust) then it would provide considerable positive benefits to both the community and the local economy. However until such plans are developed and presented we ask that every effort is made by the Council as an elected representative of the community to hold the current owner to account and safeguard this property for future use.
