Porsha Burns started this petition to Lewisville ISD

Currently in Lewisville ISD, and probably many other school districts, children as young as 10-11 years old are expected to walk to and from school. Many walking alone. There is a prominent bus system in place but the children must meet certain criteria to ride them. A student is not eligible for transportation if he or she falls into one of the categories below:

Transfer student
Student living within 2 miles of his/her home campus
Pre-Kindergarten student

It's no secret that there is a steady increase the amount of distracted drivers, sex trafficking crimes, and sexual predators today. We should do a better job of protecting our children. Let's be honest, our children are distracted too, which makes them a target for unwanted advances and/or pedestrian involved accidents. The same cellular device that we give them to ensure safety, is the same device that serves as a distraction as well. We can not expect our children to walk over a mile and not attempt to entertain themselves along the way. Close your eyes and imagine them walking, earphones plugged in, head down, completely unaware of their surroundings. My property is 1.86 miles away from my 11 year old daughter's middle school and LISD expects her to walk, and risk her life while doing so. We can not continue to act as if the safety of our children is not compromised with the current eligibility criteria. Sign this petition today so that we can see the change we need tomorrow. Again, we MUST protect our children.
